Pumped Storage Projects

Pumped Storage Projects represent an innovative way to harness the environment to produce electricity while not depleting scarce natural and man-made resources. Present day technology dictates that power generating equipment needs 8 to 10 hours to start up and shut down. This makes it impractical to start up and shut down generating equipment to meet power demands.

Using a combination of an upper and lower reservoirs, a tunneling system and hybrid electrical generators/water pumps, a pump storage project allows a power company to augment its ability to provide adequate power during peak usage period by using water flow from the upper reservoir through the tunnel system to the lower reservoir to supply hydroelectric power from the hybrid generators. When demand declines and an excess of power exists, that excess output from the plant is used to power the hybrid generators/water pumps which in turn pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir where it can be "recycled" during the next period of excess demand.
